Wuntira

We’re a business…and a non-profit

How it works

Wuntira is a social enterprise in the agricultural sector. Wuntira Agribusiness Ventures (WAV) is the business end. WAV buys agricultural commodities such as shea nuts, maize, soybeans, and sorghum from smallholder farmers at fair, stable prices and resells them to domestic and international buyers.

Wuntira Agri Foundation is the non-profit side. It provides training to farmers and shea nut collectors on good agricultural practices (GAP), climate-smart agriculture, and the creation of farmer cooperatives to increase market leverage. These coops can sell their crops to WAV, which then has funds to provide additional training and coaching through the Foundation.

Wuntira Agribusiness Ventures (WAV)

WAV buys farm commodities from smallholder farmers in Ghana. Crops include staple crops such as soybeans, maize, groundnuts, millet, and cowpeas as well as shea nuts.

Unlike traditional middlemen, who often pay the lowest prices possible and whose prices fluctuate, WAV pays a consistent, fair price for the commodities it buys. Farmers are flocking to WAV because of the sustainable prices it pays.

WAV then resells the crops to national and international buyers in the cosmetics, confectionary and other industries.

In the past few years, WAV has procured and traded approximately 1,000 tons of crop commodities as well as over 550kg of unrefined shea butter.

Wuntira Agri Foundation

Wuntira Agri Foundation provides training on shea nut collection, climate-friendly agricultural practices, financial literacy and forming cooperatives. WAV underwrites the cost of registering the cooperatives with the Ghana Registrar General Department (RGD).

Wuntira Foundation focuses on women in the remote, marginalized communities in the northern region of Ghana.

With funding from USAID and Feed the Future Ghana Trade and Investment (GTI), WAV has been able to train women in multiple communities. Classes take place over several weeks, so the participants have time to absorb the material.
